Palm Sunday pagan traditions?

Posted by admin

Chick-A- Deedle asked:

Can anyone tell me the first origins of the symbolism of “Palm Sunday”?

I’m well aware of the Christian meaning, but I can’t seem to recall the PRE-Christian traditions of the ritual. The husband and I were talking about it earlier and neither one of us can remember where the whole thing started. Macedonia? Crete? Mithras? We’re driving outselves nuts over trying to recall where this tradition began. Ten points to the first person to refresh our memory on the subject!

The townsfolk laid palm branches down to jerusalem when the tradition was set by christs entrance to welcome him brightest blessings.

Palm Sunday is the day when Christ reenacted a prophecy from the Jewish heritage about a coming king. He rode a donkey through the gates of Jerusalem on this day while people welcomed him with palm fronds.

There is no alternative/earlier pagan holiday that I know of directly correlated to this particular day and event. This is one Christian holy day that did not supercede a more ancient tradition, that’s why you can’t think of any. :) Maybe you should research crowning of kings in ancient times and that would explain more about the rituals you want to know about.

What would be interesting to me to debate is whether Jesus knew about these traditions and acted them out purposely so as to fulfill the prophecies, or was it purely coincidental….

    Best wishes.

I’m not 100% on this, but I believe I remember the origins of Palm Sunday being rooted in Rome. March was originaly the first month of the Roman year and was celebrated with many differnt events.

I believe Palm Sunday may have originally been the Festival of the Entry of the Tree. The priests and/or prestesses of one of the goddesses, Cybele or Ops or Rhea ( I can’t remmeber which?), carried boughs and wreaths through the Roman cities.

I am quite sure that this is one of the few “pure Christian” traditions and no history prior to Christianity.
