Does having a smart phone require you to take a data plan?

Would AT&T charge in any case? or in other words, would I be required to take a data plan if I get a smart phone?

    No we cannot make you take a data plan, even at our stores. The only device that does require a data type plan is the iPhone. We may STRONGLY suggest a data plan with smartphones but we do not require them (other than the iPhone)
